DRAWING WATER FROM THE SPRINGS OF SALVATION: AN INTRODUCTION TO THE PROPHET ISAIAH

The beautiful poetry of the book of the prophet Isaiah is as exquisite as its message is profound. Isaiah testifies to the presence and action of a God who is attentive to the voices of those suffering injustice and oppression, and who beckons his people to live more justly and compassionately in this world. But Isaiah’s prophetic book is also of fundamental importance to the early-Christian proclamation about Jesus. Indeed, St Jerome once remarked that Isaiah was not so much a prophet as an evangelist, because he announced the gospel so clearly in his oracles.

The early chapters of this prophetic book record the prophecies of the eighth-century prophet, Isaiah of Jerusalem. After an introduction to the nature of biblical prophecy and to Isaiah’s life and times, these eight sessions will focus on a close reading of selected passages from Isaiah 1-12 that illustrate the prophet’s message—a message that continues to challenge us today. Participants may find it useful to have a Bible to hand.
