THE CHARTERHOUSE: ENGLISH CHRISTIANITY IN STONE
For nearly 700 years, one site in London has witnessed the changing fortunes of Christianity in Great Britain. Once a burial ground for victims of the plague, it became a Carthusian monastery in 1371 and remained so for the next 150 years. It provided a spiritual home for St. Thomas More who frequented the Charterhouse for prayer and meditation. In the centuries since King Henry VIII dissolved the monastic communities in his realm, the Charterhouse has been: a royal estate, a prep school and a charitable institution providing dignified, supportive housing for the poor. Learn more about this destination spot for tourists, paupers and pilgrims in this afternoon seminar.
