Czeslaw Milosz began his 1980 Nobel Prize Lecture with an acknowledgement of “life’s God-given, marvelously complex, unpredictability.” For this distinguished Catholic poet witnessing Poland’s independence following World War I, the German occupation of Warsaw and the rise of communism, the personal and political informed poems of “longing for peace and justice.” For the first hour and a half we will discuss the assigned readings. The last half hour will be optional; all who wish will be given a prompt to write a poem based on the subjects and themes discussed that night.
