Labeled a children’s author, a Catholic writer, a Southern local color writer marked by realism and transcendence, a bridge to modern fiction and a feminist, Kate Chopin is known for her depiction of the psychological and spiritual struggles of her characters. We will begin the course by reading her early novel At Fault followed by The Awakening and conclude our study with several short stories, including “A Respectable Woman,” “The Story of an Hour,” Desiree’s Baby,” “Regret” and “Her Letters.” The novels are widely available in libraries. Print and digital copies of Chopin’s collected works and individual titles are available through various booksellers and libraries. The novels are available online through Project Gutenberg and all the short stories we will discuss are available online.
