Sacred Dining: Food in Biblical Times from Religious to Secular and the Patron Saints of the Culinary Arts

This seminar will present an overview of the types of foods eaten in the ancient world from Mesopotamia, Egypt, the Hebrew Scriptures, the New Testament and other prominent cultures from this time period. Some of the saints of the Culinary Arts to be presented are Hildegard of Bingen (Germany), the Franciscan monk, San Pasqual (Spain), Martha of Bethany, Honoré of France, Dom Justo Takayama Ukon of Japan and others. Through cultural and historical resources such as classroom readings, discussion, and a museum education visit, participants will explore eating patterns, agricultural practices, sacred and secular dining customs, nutritional value, food taboos, and other pertinent topics.
