RELIGIOUS ACCOMPANIMENTS TO PRAYER: AN INTRODUCTION

This seminar will offer an overview of religiously inspired supplements to prayer life in Christianity and other faith traditions from the ancient world to contemporary society.  St. Jerome’s treatise, as requested by St. Fabiola, on the high priest Aaron’s breastplate of 12 gemstones, the rosary, scapulars, prayer beads, religious attire worn, and the symbolism of specific colors and fabrics will be explored.  There will also be a member of the secular Carmelites who will speak about her wearing of the scapular and how it enhances her prayer life.

An optional museum visit will be scheduled at the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World or the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  Date of the visit will be announced the day of the seminar.
