Awarded the 1995 Nobel Prize for Literature “for works of lyrical beauty and ethical depth, which exalt everyday miracles and the living past, ” Seamus Heaney was raised as a Catholic in Protestant Northern Ireland. His poems include scenes from childhood, pastoral celebrations of or elegies for the land and reflections on “The Troubles.” For the first hour and a half we will discuss specific poems. The last half hour will consist of an optional writing experience. Students will be given a prompt based on the theme or style of the evening’s discussion; the evening will end with an optional sharing of writing. Students will have the option of revising their work and submitting it to the instructor for further comments.
