Starting in September, the Church of St. Francis of Assisi will begin to make the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick more easily available on a regular basis.
We will celebrate the Sacrament at the end of the daily Masses (12 PM and 5:30 PM) each week on Thursdays starting Thursday, September 15, 2022.
Everyone who is in need of this sacrament is welcome to come to be anointed.
What is the Sacramento of the Anointing of the Sick?
Those who are seriously ill need the special help of God’s grace in their time of anxiety. Through the sacrament of anointing, Christ strengthens the faithful who are afflicted by illness, providing them with the strongest means of support.
The anointing may be repeated in accordance with the conditions of serious illness, that is, the sick person recovers after being anointed and then again falls ill or if the same illness perdures.
People struggling with emotional or spiritual illness may desire the grace of the sacrament.
People struggling with addiction and those affected by someone’s addiction may seek the grace of this sacrament.
People suffering from grief may seek the grace of this sacrament.
Caregivers and those accompanying the sick may seek the grace of this healing sacrament.
We read about this sacrament in the Letter of St. James in the scriptures:
Is anyone among you sick? They should summon the elders of the church, and they should pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up. If they have committed any sins, they will be forgiven. Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. (James 5:14-16)
