Start Spreading the Compost!
It’s becoming a law. You’ll want to be a part of it. New York, New York.
May 5-11 is International Compost Awareness Week.
The top 3 reasons to compost are:
- it does not produce methane
- it is used to fertilize soil on farms and in public parks and gardens in NYC
- it keeps the rats away
Find a system and drop off site that works for your household. It shouldn’t be hard or smelly. The Dept of Sanitation and local groups like grownyc can help you. You might keep a small
container near the kitchen sink and collect scraps throughout the day. At night, transfer them to a larger, airtight container that you keep in the fridge or freezer. Deposit all at a farmers’ market, local collection site, or place it into one of the orange compost bins that are popping up all over the city.
♫ If you can compost here, you can compost anywhere. It’s up to you, New York. ♫
