On Thursday, July 26, the Feast of Saints Joachim and Anne, we invite you to join the participants of our summer course, “The Psalms: Sing a New Song to the Lord,” for a special Solemn Vespers in the upper church.
We will begin at 6:15 PM with an orientation to the liturgy led by Fr. Bill Beaudin, and then we will celebrate the beautiful, ancient Evening Prayer of the Church.

We invite you to take part in Days of Prayer dedicated to Parents and Grandparents in honor of Saints Joachim and Anne, the parents of Mary, and grandparents of Jesus.
Special prayers will be said after the 11:30 AM and 4:30 PM Masses Monday to Thursday, July 23-26.
Envelopes will be available on which you may write the names of parents and grandparents whom you would like to have remembered on these days.
SING A NEW SONG TO THE LORD!These words, from the beginning of Psalm 149, are echoed throughout the other 149 poems/prayers that make up the Book of Psalms. For nearly 2500 years, the psalms have played a central role in the lives of Jews and Christians alike. They have been sung in public worship and prayed in private devotion. They have been meditated upon by saints, commented upon by scholars, and set to a variety of musical styles ranging from Gregorian chant to Bach and Brahms, Ives and Stravinsky. The Book of Psalms is not only a treasury of prayers. It is a school of prayer in which the inspired Word of God teaches us how to pray just as Jesus, God’s Word made flesh, taught his disciples when he introduced them to the Our Father.
St. Francis Adult Education Center is pleased to offer an intensive summer workshop on the psalms. This course will meet twice a week for three weeks in July. For the first five classes, participants will have the option of registering for the noon session (12 – 1:15 p.m.) OR the evening session (6:15 – 7:30 p.m.). Taught by three members of St. Francis of Assisi’s parish staff—Mr. Joseph Nuzzi, Fr. Bill Beaudin and Fr. Timothy Shreenan—the course will cover the following topics:
Week 1 (July 11, 12) The Psalms: Hymnal of the Jerusalem Temple
Joseph Nuzzi will introduce participants to the various types and major themes of the psalms, the characteristics of the Hebrew poetry in which the psalms were written, and the role of the psalms in the religious life of Israel.
Week 2 (July 18, 19) The Psalms: Prayer Book of the Christian Church
Fr. William will explore the influence of the psalms on the New Testament, the Church’s liturgy, and Christian spirituality, and will discuss what it means to find Christ in the psalms and to pray the psalms with Christ.
Week 3 (July 25) The Psalms: Muse for Artists and Musicians
Fr. Timothy will demonstrate how the psalms have been the inspiration for some of the western world’s finest artistic creations in images and sounds.
The workshop will conclude on the evening of July 26 in St. Francis of Assisi Church where the various themes of the course will be brought together in an introduction by Fr. William and a celebration of Solemn Sung Vespers by the workshop’s participants.

We are again celebrating this welcome to all people at our United in Love Celebration.
This is a Weekend of Prayer for and with our LGBT Brothers and Sisters.
This is an opportunity for our whole parish community to remember that the Lord invited all people to follow him, regardless of race, ethnicity, economic background, gender or sexual orientation.
It is also an opportunity for all of us to invite to Mass any of our friends who many not feel welcome at the table of the Lord for whatever reason, but especially if they are gay or lesbian. Take the opportunity to bear witness to the unconditional love of God by reaching out and inviting back a brother or sister who hasn’t been home in a while.

Relics of St. Anthony will be available for veneration in the lower church throughout the day.
Blessed St. Anthony’s Bread will be distributed all day long in the 32nd Street entrance and in front of the church on 31st Street as long as supplies last.
A month from now, the Franciscans of the United States will be gathering in each of their Provinces for an Extraordinary Chapter, which will be a special meeting during which they will make decisions about the future of the Franciscan Order here in the United States and how they can best respond to the needs of the Church and our society.
On Tuesday, May 29, Wednesday, May 30, and Thursday, May 31, there will be no 7:00 AM Mass.
The confession schedule will have one slight change: in the afternoon, confessions will be heard from 4:30 to 5:30 PM.
Monday, May 28th, is Memorial Day.
We will observe our summer holiday schedule with just one Mass at 11:30 AM.
There will be no confessions and the church offices will be closed.
Let us prayerfully remember all those who have given their lives in defense of our country, and for the cause of freedom throughout the world, especially the members of our armed forces who have died while serving in various parts of the world. “There is no greater love than this – to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”
