Advent Listening / New Year Beginnings
During the final weeks of Advent, we have listened to John the Baptist. Like some of those hearing him for the first time, perhaps we found ourselves asking a genuine listener’s question: “What must we do to prepare the way for the coming of the Lord?” On a personal level, we may find a way to pour oil on the troubled waters of a tense and fractured relationship; to ask pardon from someone hurt by a broken promise; to soften the hardheartedness that makes it so difficult for us to offer or receive forgiveness after a quarrel. Perhaps there are injustices on a larger scale, at home or further afield, on which we should take some action. Would now be a good time to take a stand for what is right? We live in an age of increasing ecological awareness, and we recognize that our planet has suffered serious damage, caused by human exploitation of the good things of Creation. Do we need to extend our concern for the oppressed and the vulnerable and include the Earth itself? In addition, what of the pandemic? Do we realize our obligation to stay safe by following protocols recommended by the CDC and the NIH? We are not alone during this crisis. These are thoughts for listening to the Word of the Lord through the prophetic voice of John the Baptist.

We remember Coronavirus victims and Heroes this Christmas
For Christmas this year, we have added doves to our Christmas trees in the sanctuary. Each dove is a symbol of our prayer, our hope, and our remembering.
Some doves bear the names of people who are suffering from this pandemic: Those who have died from the virus, those struggling with the virus right now, and those who are out of work due to the economic impact of the pandemic.
Other doves bear the names of the humble heroes who continue to put themselves in harms way to make sure the rest of us are OK during this difficult time: medical personnel, first responders and essential workers.

Merry Christmas from St. Francis of Assisi
The friars and staff send out our heartfelt greetings and warmest wishes for a Very Merry Christmas to all of our parishioners, friends and visitors.
We know that this Christmas is unlike any Christmas any of us have ever experienced. People in our community, country and around the world are suffering due to the pandemic raging around us. So many people have died. So many are sick this Christmas. So many are out of work and suffering serious economic stress and so many medical professionals, first responders and essential workers are exhausted by months of being there in harms way for the sake of the rest of us. It is difficult to find light and joy this Christmas.
But the first Christmas was difficult too: Mary and Joseph were far from home, alone and had no place to stay. They did not have a lot of money. Mary had to deliver her baby in a stable and lay her little boy in a manger surrounded by farm animals. And yet, the Angels sang at the birth of the savior. In the midst of that darkness they announced the good news to a world in desperate need of it.
In the midst of this pandemic, maybe we can gaze again into the manger and see our God who was willing to enter this beautiful, yet often difficult, scary world. Maybe we can take the time to remember that the Son of God leapt down from the heavens to be with us for one reason only: He loves us that much.
Our pray this year is that God’s love, which is always with us, might fill our hearts with faith that God is with us, and with hope He will see us through and beyond this moment.
Merry Christmas!
Thank you from our Director of Music
Here is a personal message from our Director of Music Ministries, Meredith Augustin to all of you who joined us online to watch Carols with the Choir:
Please join the Friars, members of our music ministry and Friends for a wonderful afternoon of music and prayer!
Let’s get digital! Staying connected to the Church of St. Francis of Assisi community looks a lot different these days and we are bringing our annual Carols with the Choir to you!
Carols With the Choir has been a tradition at the Church of St. Francis of Assisi for over 8 years! We will be hosting Carols with the Choir virtually, so you can participate from the comfort and safety of your home. We have an exciting program planned with music, comedy and a special song by our very own Father Barry Langely. The event will be hosted by everyone’s favorite, Father Michael Carnevale.
Host a gathering at your house, with those in your covid social bubble or plan to enjoy on your own from the comfort of your couch. Either way, we have beautiful afternoon for you to enjoy while you watch our awesome lineup of music. The best part is you don’t have to leave your house! We are excited to offer the Carols With the Choir concert at no charge as our gift to you. However, we hope you will consider making a free-will donation to help sustain everything we do here at the Church of St. Francis of Assisi.
