THE POETRY OF W. H. AUDEN: SIGNING THE TIMES
THE POETRY OF W. H. AUDEN: SIGNING THE TIMES
Born in in York, England, Auden spent the second half of his life residing in both England and America, Auden’s work links modern and post-modern poetry. Known for a wide stylistic range, Auden’s poetry often tracks a metaphorical or real journey or quest. Drawing on popular culture, politics, current events and inventions, Auden’s poetry chronicles his age and challenges us to read the signs of our times.
For the first hour and a half, we will discuss Auden’s poems; during the last half hour we will write in response to prompts based on the poems discussed during class. The writing session is optional, but all are invited to participate. At the end of the writing, students will have the opportunity to share their work and later to submit it by email for further comments.

DRAWING WATER FROM THE SPRINGS OF SALVATION: AN INTRODUCTION TO THE PROPHET ISAIAH
DRAWING WATER FROM THE SPRINGS OF SALVATION: AN INTRODUCTION TO THE PROPHET ISAIAH
The beautiful poetry of the book of the prophet Isaiah is as exquisite as its message is profound. Isaiah testifies to the presence and action of a God who is attentive to the voices of those suffering injustice and oppression, and who beckons his people to live more justly and compassionately in this world. But Isaiah’s prophetic book is also of fundamental importance to the early-Christian proclamation about Jesus. Indeed, St Jerome once remarked that Isaiah was not so much a prophet as an evangelist, because he announced the gospel so clearly in his oracles.
The early chapters of this prophetic book record the prophecies of the eighth-century prophet, Isaiah of Jerusalem. After an introduction to the nature of biblical prophecy and to Isaiah’s life and times, these eight sessions will focus on a close reading of selected passages from Isaiah 1-12 that illustrate the prophet’s message—a message that continues to challenge us today. Participants may find it useful to have a Bible to hand.

JAMES JOYCE’S SELF-PORTRAIT OF AN ARTIST
JAMES JOYCE’S SELF-PORTRAIT OF AN ARTIST
“Once upon a time and a very good time it was…” So begins the fictional memoir of Joyce’s early life and education. A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, the sequel to Dubliners, was voted the third best English-language novel of the 20th century (Joyce’s Ulysses was voted number one). This course will take a close look at Joyce’s Portrait and conclude with a viewing and discussion of Joseph Strick’s 1977 film adaptation of the work. The novel is readily available in bookstores or online.

DYING TO LIVE: THE DEATH THAT LEADS TO A FULLER LIFE
DYING TO LIVE: THE DEATH THAT LEADS TO A FULLER LIFE
In discussions of Christian spirituality, we often read or hear of the necessity of “dying to self.” But what “self” needs to die? It is the false self, the ego that imprisons us in varying degrees of misery, pain and suffering. This two-day long course will offer instruction about the formation of the false self and best practices for ongoing transformation into our true selves, the selves made in the image and likeness of God.
The second day will also include experiences of lectio divina and centering prayer.

The Letters of St. Paul, Part 2
The Letters of St. Paul, Part 2
In this eight-week course we will introduce the second half of the Pauline epistles. We will proceed in roughly chronological order and cover those letters generally accepted to be written by St. Paul himself as well as the disputed letters attributed to Paul. We will study the letters to investigate Paul’s understanding of Christ, of the Holy Spirit, of salvation and of the nature of the Church and the development of these ideas in the later letters attributed to Paul. In the process we will also discuss life in these early communities, Christian living and the relationship between Christianity and its parent religion: Judaism. It is helpful to have taken the fall course introducing the first half of Paul’s letters, but not necessary. Participants may take this course without having taken the first course.
We will be studying: Romans, Second Thessalonians, Colossians, Ephesians, First Timothy, Second Timothy and Titus.
