THE CALL TO HOLINESS IN TODAY’S WORLD
Join us for a 5-part series on Pope Francis’s Apostolic Exhortation GAUDETE ET EXSULTATE: On the Call to Holiness in Today’s World. The pope writes “We are frequently tempted to think that holiness is only for those who can withdraw from ordinary affairs to spend much time in prayer. That is not the case. We are called to be holy by living our lives with love and by bearing witness in everything we do, wherever we find ourselves.”
There is much truth to be found in Pope Francis’s words! There are five chapters in the pope’s exhortation, and in each of the five weeks we will discuss one of the chapters. You can find copies of the Exhortation online or in religious bookstores such as the Pauline Bookstore on 29th Street. It is also available free online on the Vatican website HERE.

FIRST CORINTHIANS: PAUL’S IMPASSIONED PLEA TO A DIVIDED CHURCH
Mondays of Lent: March 7, 14, 21, 28 and April 4 & 11
7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Composed nearly two thousand years ago, 1 Corinthians stands as a monument to St. Paul’s theological, pastoral and rhetorical gifts, and its message is as relevant today as it was in 55 A.D. Lent, that season of the church year when we strive to become, with the help of God’s grace, a Christian community worth joining, is a perfect time to read and reflect on Paul’s exhortation to unity, mutual service, and self-effacing love.
Presenter: Fr. William Beaudin, O.F.M.
Monday Holiday – Presidents’ Day

DRAWING WATER FROM THE SPRINGS OF SALVATION: AN INTRODUCTION TO THE PROPHET ISAIAH
The beautiful poetry of the book of the prophet Isaiah is as exquisite as its message is profound. Isaiah testifies to the presence and action of a God who is attentive to the voices of those suffering injustice and oppression, and who beckons his people to live more justly and compassionately in this world. But Isaiah’s prophetic book is also of fundamental importance to the early-Christian proclamation about Jesus. Indeed, St Jerome once remarked that Isaiah was not so much a prophet as an evangelist, because he announced the gospel so clearly in his oracles.
The early chapters of this prophetic book record the prophecies of the eighth-century prophet, Isaiah of Jerusalem. After an introduction to the nature of biblical prophecy and to Isaiah’s life and times, these eight sessions will focus on a close reading of selected passages from Isaiah 1-12 that illustrate the prophet’s message—a message that continues to challenge us today. Participants may find it useful to have a Bible to hand.

JAMES JOYCE’S SELF-PORTRAIT OF AN ARTIST
“Once upon a time and a very good time it was…” So begins the fictional memoir of Joyce’s early life and education. A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, the sequel to Dubliners, was voted the third best English-language novel of the 20th century (Joyce’s Ulysses was voted number one). This course will take a close look at Joyce’s Portrait and conclude with a viewing and discussion of Joseph Strick’s 1977 film adaptation of the work. The novel is readily available in bookstores or online.
